Dr. E. Valanou completed her Ph.D with the department of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics at the Medical School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, where she assumed for several years, relevant positions as temporary Lecturer and Research Assistant, specializing in nutrition, food and health.
Concurrently she also served as a Senior Research Associate at the Hellenic Health Foundation for more than 12 years, gaining considerable exposure to national and international research projects related to diet, nutrition and physical activity.
The research projects she partook, involved the monitoring of risk assessment tools and the conduct of national dietary surveys, and have been commissioned by organisations such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Public Health Executive Agency (PHEA) and the Greek Ministry of Health.
In 2019 she has been selected amongst other fellow scientists to attend the 1-year EUFORA fellowship work programme, a key EFSA initiative delivered by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the United Kingdom. During the fellowship she was fully integrated in FSA work, gaining hands-on experience and acquiring deep expertise in scientific matters pertaining not just to Microbiological and Chemical risk assessment, but also to Novel Foods, Health Claims, GMOs, and Food Supplements.
Her main strength lies in her skill to apply in depth scientific knowledge and insights on risk assessment, food, feed, nutrition and the relevant EU regulations, in order to provide answers to industry pertinent questions.
